Helping After Harvey – A Nation of Neighbors

As haunting images from Hurricane Harvey’s destruction fill our screens, we can’t help thinking about the time Sandy hit home, wreaking destruction and uprooting the lives of neighbors and friends.

Back then, Islanders rose up, lending helping hands, preparing and delivering meals, and being there when our neighbors needed us the most. In that spirit, we want to reach out and do our share to help the people of Houston during this most challenging time. At this point, monetary donations are most vital to allow local helpers and nonprofits do their job. We encourage you to give to organizations that are on the ground and know how to get things done.
Here are some suggestions:

  • Team Rubicon: A dedicated group of military vets who made it their mission to continue serving their community through first-hand rescue efforts and disaster relief. They were here with us during Sandy; they now need our support in Houston.
  • Houston Habitat for Humanities: For almost thirty years, they have worked hard to build houses for families in need. Now, they are helping to repair and restore homes across the Houston area.
  • Americares: Thousands need emergency medicine, water, and basic supplies. Americares works with local partners on the ground to distribute critical supplies and mobilize medical outreach.
  • Houston SPCA: They are at the front line to rescue animals impacted by the storm. Help them with their efforts to reach animals in danger.
